Keeping students safe at school requires ongoing vigilance. Threats are serious and taken seriously.
Threat
A threat is an expression of intent to harm someone.
What Is a School Threat Assessment?
A school threat assessment is a systematic process used to identify, evaluate, and manage potential threats or concerning behaviors exhibited by students. The goal is to prevent violence by addressing these behaviors before they escalate. Threat assessment is intended to prevent violence and involves both assessment and intervention.
How Does It Work?
A multidisciplinary threat assessment team comprising administration, school resource officer, school psychologist, school counselor, teachers, and sometimes other staff meets when a threat or concerning behavior is reported that needs review. The team assesses it thoroughly.
The assessment considers factors like the student’s intent, access to weapons, and any history of violence. A threat to harm others can be transient (i.e., expression of anger or frustration that can be effectively resolved) or substantive (i.e., serious intent to harm others that involves a detailed plan and means).
Based on the evaluation, the team develops a plan with appropriate response and interventions which maintains a safe school environment.
Please report any known threats immediately.
